Physical Exams Q & A
What are physicals?
When you think of physicals, you might think of the yearly checkup you had as a child before starting a new school year, or the one you needed to clear you to play in a sport. But physicals aren’t just for school-aged kids.
As an adult, a yearly physical is an ideal way to make sure you’re healthy. It gives Dr. Auer the opportunity to screen you for a wide range of health conditions, including those where factors such as your age or family history might leave you at a heightened risk.
These regular screenings ensure that Dr. Auer catches any health challenges in their earliest phases when treatment is most effective.
Dr. Auer offers this preventive care to all of his patients and tailors it based on your specific needs. The types of physicals he offers include:
- Annual physicals
- Women’s health exams
- Sports physical
- School physicals
Whether your child’s school is requiring a physical or you’re looking for a way to be proactive about your health, Dr. Auer is available to see to your family’s needs.
What should I expect during a physical?
The physical exam has two main facets.
Health overview
During this portion of the physical, Dr. Auer talks with you (and your child, if the physical is for them). You discuss any family history of disease, current health habits (like diet and exercise), and any health questions you may have. The goal of this portion of your physical is to make sure Dr. Auer is informed about the current state of your health.
Physical exam
Next, Dr. Auer performs the appropriate tests based on the type of physical. If it’s a sports physical, for example, he may ask you to exercise for a period of time so he can check your heart and lungs after exertion. For a women’s health exam, he performs screenings specific to protecting the woman’s reproductive health.
For all patients, this portion of the exam includes Dr. Auer checking heart rate, blood pressure, temperature, and other key health indicators.
Before performing any physical exam, Dr. Auer lets you know what to expect. He prioritizes your comfort during your physical.
Who should get physicals?
Simply put, everyone. A yearly physical is a highly effective preventive health tool that helps you stay your healthiest at any age.
