Women Health Exams Q & A
What are women’s health exams?
While people of all ages and genders benefit from annual physicals to help them protect themselves from a wide range of health risks, annual screenings are especially important for women. With women’s health exams, Dr. Auer ensures that every aspect of your health — including your pelvic and breast health — is being properly monitored.
With regular women’s health exams, you give Dr. Auer the opportunity to catch any health challenges as early as possible. This way, you can start treatment when it will be both most effective and least invasive.
What should I expect during a women’s health exam?
At David E. Auer, MD, your women’s health exam consists of two parts.
Health history
First, you have a conversation with Dr. Auer about your health. You talk about your family health history so he can determine which screenings you might need based on your specific genetic risk factors.
You also talk about your health choices, like what you generally eat and how much you sleep and exercise. Again, this helps Dr. Auer best determine which screenings will help you protect your long-term health.
This portion of your exam is intended to be a conversation. Dr. Auer asks you questions, and you can ask any you have. Dr. Auer aims to educate you so you leave your appointment feeling informed and empowered to protect your health.
Physical exam
Next, Dr. Auer performs any physical exams that are right for your body. That could include a breast exam to screen you for breast cancer, a Pap smear to screen you for cervical cancer, or other woman-specific examinations so Dr. Auer can fully check you for any relevant health issues.
How often should I get a women’s health exam?
Dr. Auer recommends this preventive health care on a yearly basis. Your exam may vary from year to year. For example, if your Pap smear came back normal and you don’t have a heightened risk for cervical cancer, you won’t need another one for three years. Each year, Dr. Auer tailors your exam to you.
Be proactive about staying healthy by scheduling your women’s health exam online or calling the office to make your appointment today.
